Suggestions for the new GCSE Statistics course

The development of the new GCSE Statistics course (for first teaching from September) is underway. We would like to give you the opportunity to comment and give suggestions on the design of the specification. Please use this thread to discuss ideas on areas that you'd like to see improved. For instance, would you want to have same coursework criteria and similar projects or something different.

We will investigate implementing popular themes or innovative suggestions from the discussion.

I have to agree with the no coursework sentiment.  It is a huge headache and ends up, due to time constraints, being more of a hoop-jumping activity than a valuable educational activity.

Whilst I agree that it very very important that coursework should not be a hoop jumping exercise I can see a place for coursework in a Statistics GCSE.

The unfortunate situation is that the current, soon to be dead, statistics coursework for GCSE Mathematics has been a hoop jumping exercise with inappropriate statistical techniques being necesary to achieve the higher marks. By 'inappropriate' I mean techniques that the pupils use without having any understanding of what they are doing. As a result coursework has gained a bad reputation.

If those working on the new specification are able to include appropriate coursework then it may be helpful in gaining the interest of pupils in the area of statistical analysis. I could be that this is not possible at GCSE level and if this is the case then I would agree with those who think it should be left out.

We like the course, it fits into Year 10 instead of an early entry and covers all the HD in the Maths GCSE, but the coursework is a real pain.
