A2 unit on French Revolution (B1)

Are there any plans to publish an edexcel GCE textbook to support this unit?

    Hello

At the moment there are no plans to produce an Edexcel student book for this topic. The publishers are currently focussing on the Unit 2 and 3 books that are currently being written before deciding which topics to cover next, and they are likely to look at producing more Unit 1 books next.

Hodder have just updated their Access to History book on France in Revolution by Dylan Rees - it covers alot of the spec and has some specimen questions in it.

The problem with Unit 3 is that we won't know how popular each topic will be until next summer's entries come in so its hard to put pressure on the publishers to write books when there is no hard data to back us up. I will look into getting some more information about the relative popularity of topics such as this soon.

    Hello

I was contacted this morning by William Simpson who has recently co-written, with Martin Jones, a book called Europe 1783-1914, published by Routledge:

    http://www.routledgehistory.com/books/Europe-17831914-isbn9780415470667

William has provided me with the following information about this book...

This book was first published in 2000 and received favourable reviews in Contemporary Review - see link above for the review. The authors were both Heads of History at Cheltenham College. The second edition has been updated and expanded. It covers the history of individual countries, France, Russia, Germany, Italy and themes such as industrial and scientific change, intellectual and cultural developments, Marxism and left wing movements, imperialism and relations between Europe and the USA.

There is extensive treatment of the French Revolution and the rule of Napoleon, both in France and Europe and the book also includes an account of the restored French monarchy between 1815 and 1848. At the end of each of the six chapters there are Topics for Debate which include original sources and recent interpretations of current controversies e.g. Why did the experiment in Constitutional Monarchy fail?  Each chapter begins with a list of key dates and concludes with a guide to further reading.

This book should be suitable for our A2 French Revolution topic. I would be interested to hear from teachers who have used it in the past, or are planning on using it for the new specification.

We will be teaching this unit too and are trying to decide as a matter of urgency which text book to buy as the main one for students.  The best we have come up with so far is Revolution and Reaction by Andrew Matthews (Cambridge University Press).

It covers France 1783-1849.  We've used it in the past for both the French Revolution and Napoleon.  It lacks detail in some topics but in my view it is very clearly written.

I'd be very interested to hear what others are planning to use.

For info, we've now chosen to use Sally Waller, France in Revolution, 1776-1830 (Heinemann) as it also has a section on interpretations.

    Hello

We have produced some additional guidance on the controversies for Unit 3 Option B1 France 1786-1830: Revolution, Empire and Restoration in our document folders.

The document contains some additional guidance on the controversies and some recommended texts and can be found on the link below:
